I'm Very Okay With This

Are you a fan of the television series Stranger Things? Well, producers of Stranger Things and director of The End of the F***ing World have collabed together to make one of the most underrated television shows on Netflix, I Am Not Okay With This. Although this TV series is quite small, only having one season and each episode being at most 28 minutes and at least 19 minutes, every minute is well spent.
Thankfully being quarantined due to the wicked coronavirus will allow people to binge watch any and all types of television series and I Am Not Okay With This, is one you do not want to miss. This television show was recently produced in 2020, and I think it has a lot of potential to grow and become something bigger.
Throughout I Am Not Okay With This, a girl who goes by the name Syd, who is played by Sophia Lillis, is faced with the challenge of her father committing suicide in the basement of her home. But not only is his suicide a challenge, Syd's also dealing with being able to move things with her mind but only when she is angry, mad or embarrassed.
Being able to move objects with her mind scared it, but to the audience it may seem great, but, alas, in the last episode something traumatic will occur in front of the entire school; something so jaw-dropping and utterly unexpected will occur, and it is worth every minute spent on this television series.
This television series also has many plot twists and unexpected surprises. This includes Syd's love life and friendships throughout the series. Syd's best friend, Dina, who is played by Sofia Bryant, is also undergoing some devastation with her lovelife, which will affect Syd's mental health. Not only is Syd's and Dina's friendship in shambles in I Am Not Okay With This, but so is Syd's confusing relationship with Stanley, who is played by Wyatt Oleff.
On Rotten Tomatoes, a website that is known for reviewing movies and television series, viewer Yesion states, "The only thing I didn't like about this show was how short it was." This shows this individual who watched I Am Not Okay With This thought this show was very enjoyable and should be extended, which I agree with.
Overall, I Am Not Okay With This is a really good thriller to watch while stuck at home. If I could rewatch any television series over again it would be this one.

On My Block Season 3
By Brandon Roberts

If you’re an On My Block fan then you would know season 2 left everyone on the edge of their seat when the main characters Monse, Cesar, Jamal and Ruby got kidnapped in the last episode.
In the opening episode, you are shown why and who the characters were snatched up by. They were taken by a mistress that goes by the name “Cuchillos”, which in Spanish means knives, she was in on the entire Rollerworld heist which has been a huge topic of the whole series since season one. They are assigned a secret mission to help her find her missing lover who faked his death to get away from all the drama. He goes by the name Ricky Galindo but to the Santos, another gang within the neighborhood, who goes by “Lil Ricky” the creator of the whole gang.
A powerful scene in episode one is when Spooky, Caesar's older brother, and Jamal go to dig up Lil Ricky’s grave when all that was left to be seen was a little gnome-like skeleton waiting for more clues and mysteries to come.
Actor Ada Luz Ola or Cuchillos is a new addition to the show and already seems to be a huge impact, she is introduced as a strong impact in the third season. She shows a sneaky and very feminine position in the show that adds interest and conflict in the show because it’s either: find the love of her life or she kills the whole crew which adds conflict with a bit of suspense to the whole plot of the show.
If you’re looking for a new show to watch, then I highly recommend checking out the teen drama show on Netflix; it’s almost addicting once you get into it and they never disappoint.

The Invisible Man

Are you getting bored of the same routine every weekend? Go home, sleep, eat, chill with friends; it gets boring after a while.
If you want to see a good movie that will have you on the edge of your seat, I would recommend The Invisible Man.
This movie stars Elizabeth Moss as Cecilla, Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Griffen, Aldis Hodge as James, Storm Reid as Sydney, Michael Dorman as Griffen.
Warning! Spoilers ahead, so if you plan to see it, don’t read.
This starts off with Cecilla trying to leave her controlling, abusive husband ,Griffen, without waking him. A car alarm goes off, waking him so she’s forced to make a run for it. After a few days of hiding from him, her sister alerts her that he has committed suicide. Cecilla feels relieved but knows somethings not right. He begins to attack her, photograph her sleeping and hide things in the house she’s staying at. Cecilla finally realizes he’s not dead; Griffen just found a way to make himself invisible.
I would rate this movie an 8/10 because of the suspense and thrill. This movie is different from the rest because the audience can’t see him, at all. Unlike every other movie where you can probably guess what’s gonna happen, in this one you don’t know, it’s shocking.
One thing that I would change about the movie is the length, I would want to make it longer or put something else into The Invisible Man to spice it up or give it something to make its mark.
This movie is overall a good movie to see and something different or new besides the same rerun of stuff.

A Novel to Die For
By Daliah Khalil
March 4, 2020
Imagine being falsely convicted of murder and punished with the death penalty while being belittled in court based on your race. Imagine being called "a hog" and not human enough. These derogatory phrases were enough to begin Jefferson's lesson before dying.
In the novel, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest Gaines, Jefferson undergoes a life-changing occurrence which will affect his and the main character Grant Wiggins's life. A Lesson Before Dying is a great read and worthwhile, and it expresses the challenges a minority may have faced during the 1940s in Louisiana, while also displaying how internal challenges may influence one's decisions.
The plot was very smooth; each scene that took place happened for a reason. The author made sure to set the scene and make sure the setting was detailed. One example of this is when he explains the location and organization of Grant's occupation.
The tone and mood set throughout A Lesson Before Dying helped the audience understand the type of situation Grant was in throughout the entire novel, such as when Jefferson was being disrespectful towards Miss Emma, his godmother, and Grant had to step in and speak to Jefferson about how Jefferson must care about the people who love him.
According to Mary Alice from Goodreads.com, A Lesson Before Dying is an "absolutely incredible book. I was on my couch sobbing during parts of it. And it takes a lot to make me shed tears. Great writing. Brings you right into the moment." This shows this book was well written, and made some readers quite emotional.
Not only did this novel unleash the emotions of the reader, but it was written so well that it made them shed tears. A Lesson Before Dying expresses racial profiling in a manner to show how African Americans are treated unruly compared to the whites, and how their lifestyles are completely different. This makes the reader think about the way society has evolved for the better since the 1940s.
So, if you're ever looking for a good book to read that's emotional, yet reveals the truth about society approximately 50 years ago, A Lesson Before Dying is the perfect novel for you. Grab a comfortable blanket and pillow and get to reading!

Non-Stop Page Turning The Goldfinch
By Destiny Lortos

Every morning you awake in the comfort of your own home with everyone you love, but what if that were to be gone in just an instant? If this question intrigues you, you’ll probably want to read Donna Tart’s mammoth but worthwhile novel The Goldfinch.
Theo is a 13-year-old boy who has just been suspended from school and has a conference to attend with his mother Audrey. On the way they decide to stop at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and explore different works, especially The Goldfinch. Theo is too preoccupied with a red-haired girl named Pippa to care about any of the work and decides to focus on her to take his mind off the trouble he got in at school. However, little did they know this event would change his life forever.
As Stephen King says, “The Goldfinch is a rarity that comes along perhaps half a dozen times per decade, a smartly written literary novel that connects with the heart as well as the mind.”
Tart does an excellent job giving the perspective of a young boy who goes through many traumas and hardships. She displays such difficulties through death, rejection and addiction to drugs and alcohol.
Theo experienced rejection even before the bombing at the museum. His father left the family when Theo was a young boy. At the museum Theo meets Pippa, and it’s love at first sight, but because of their past she refuses to be with him because it would be a constant reminder of the explosion. It’s ultimately a universal experience many can relate to.
After the museum tragedy Theo lives with his friend Andy. Theo’s father interferes. Theo travels to Las Vegas to live with him, and during his stay with his dad he is introduced to many exposures including alcohol and drugs. Theo relies on such substances to cope with his loss and deal with depression and anxiety. He relies on the Goldfinch to give a sense of relief and joy, but it all comes at a price. The anxious feeling of not knowing what will happen next keeps the pages turning even after page 800.
Tart displays elements of suspense, thriller, action, romance and more. The story will keep you on the tip of your toes to see the final outcome of Theo’s journey with the goldfinch.

I Don't Love You

After watching To All The Boys I've Loved Before, I just couldn't wait until the sequel came out. The first movie was quite long -- approximately an hour and 40 minutes -- and to be honest, there wasn't a minute wasted throughout the movie. Once I finished that movie, I just knew that the sequel would have to be even better. But soon as I finished the sequel, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, I was immediately let down.
In the first film, you could see the full ranges of emotions, starting from love to anger to sadness. Each scene was aesthetically pleasing as well matching with the mood of the main character Lara Jean (Lana Condor). For example, when Lara was on a date with Peter (Noah Centineo), her first love interest, the diner had red and pink decorations to symbolize love, and also had slow and romantic music playing. This scene allows the audience to think about their first date with their significant other.
Lara Jean is a high schooler who has no social life until her little sister, Kitty (Anna Cathcart), mails Lara's love letters, and that's when the drama really begins. All of her former flames approached Lara about what they've received, leaving her shocked and misunderstood.
I was disappointed because the storyline was lacking. There weren’t enough details, nor was there a range of emotions being shown as compared to the first movie. Although To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You showed emotion, it was perfunctory and not dramatic enough for my liking.
Also, there was inconsistency between who played what character. For instance, in To All The Boys, John Ambrose's (Jordan Burtchett/Jordan Fisher) ethnicity was white, while in the sequel he was mixed. This shows a flaw with the characters being represented.
According to junior Brandon Roberts, "The movie was boring. I fell asleep halfway through the movie, and I feel like there could've been more action taking place."
Critic Linda Holmes from Rotten Tomatoes states, "It doesn't have the same effortlessness or the clean storyline that To All The Boys I've Loved Before did, but that's partly because it's a more complicated story emotionally."
Not only did I think that To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You was not worthwhile, but so did multiple other viewers as well. If you're interested in watching a romantic movie, instead of watching To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, I suggest you watch The Notebook or even The Kissing Booth.

Echoes in Death... More like Echoes of Snores
By Daliah Khalil

Do you enjoy mystery novels that leave you hanging at the end of each chapter? Well, Echoes of Death by J.D. Robb is not the book for you. This novel isn't worth wasting approximately one week reading it.
Echoes of Death is a mystery/thriller novel, trying to find the serial killer rapist on the loose. Eve, the main character, is a police officer that spends her day trying to find this killer. The specific case of Daphne Strazza was especially draining for her because when she was younger, Eve was raped, so it brought horrific flashbacks. But she still continued to stay professional and not let her emotions get ahead of her.
"This installment has the handiwork of ghostwriters written all over it -bad plotting, huge plot holes, and inconsistent characterization," says Good Reads reviewer, Melissa. Her review reveals this novel is not as good as it seems.
Throughout the novel, the author writes about the renovations done on Eve and Roake's (her husband) house. The house renovations have nothing to do with the plot at all. It seems like the author just wanted to fill the book with words. It's understandable for an author to want to set the scene, but it felt like every chapter talked a little about her house.
Eve's partner, Peabody, was a detective that worked side by side with her, but it never seemed like the roles were equal. Peabody was more like Eve's secretary rather than partner, which is unfortunate because Peabody helped solve this case just as much as Eve did.
The plot got slightly confusing as well because Eve was working on two cases at the same time. So, this made it difficult to understand what details connect to which case. For instance, Strazza wasn't pregnant when she was raped but Miko, another rape victim, was pregnant and was killed after the assault. This would leave confusion on the reader because the details weren’t specific enough.
For a mystery/thriller novel Echoes in Death wasn't impressive, nor worthwhile. Reading a book from the Goosebumps series might be more thrilling than this novel.

Student Council
By Nallisa Segrist-Bellamah
December 10, 2019
A student council is a group of elected students working with an adult adviser to volunteer around the community. A student gets elected to be in student council, and each class has voting polls. If your a junior, you would only vote for 4 people to be in student council. There is a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. They help around the school, making school more fun to go to.
You can expect many different activities and fundraiser all throughout the school year. Including a movie night where student council will be hosting two Christmas movies in the mini auditorium at the high school. Student council is also a fundraiser to help each class gain money for special events. For example, the Junior Class Officers are selling “reindeer mix”, which is hot chocolate and you can either get mint or double chocolate, the mix will be shaped as a reindeer!
Before the holidays, student council has some fun ideas. They are planning on having a Santa coming in during advisory and lunch. During this time students will be able to get a picture with him! But like I said before, they will also be playing Christmas movies to raise money for activities that students would want to do.
Some obstacles student council faces is the volunteers are involved in lots of other organizations besides student council. So, with that being said, it's hard for all the volunteers to be with each other to plan stuff at the same time. Most of the volunteers are also in Captains Council, Hope Squad, SAGA and more. They are also trying to keep their grades up. So being apart of all of those things can be stressful and overwhelming at times, but it's definitely worth it. All these organizations make our school a better environment to be in.
Student council is extremely helpful for our school because it allows us to learn to be more responsible and flexible. Also it allows us to raise awareness and fundraisers for special events like Prom, Homecoming and even Spirit Week. Student council helps the school activities out more than people realize, and they have fun doing so.

So Long, Farewell to the Norwood Production
By Daliah Khalil

Although the musical, The Sound of Music, was amazing, the sound of the music was inconsistent.
The Sound Of Music tells the story of a young girl, Maria, who wants to become a nun. Unfortunately, Mother Abbess, the head nun, and the rest of the nuns, believe she is too free- spirited to become a nun. This leads them to tell Maria that she will have to leave the abbey. They couldn't just kick her out of the abbey, so they give her governess position with a family. This gives Maria a couple months to fully decide whether or not she will settle down to become a nun. What will happen?
The beginning of Norwood’s production spotlighted a group of nuns singing and doing chores. Their acting was amazing, but it was hard to hear them. This was quite irritating since, when you're listening to music, you want to listen to every part of harmony, starting from the sopranos all the way to the basses. But sitting closer to the stage allowed me to hear them sing, which sounded good.
Although the microphones weren't thrilling, when senior Hannah Urell -- playing as Maria-- got on stage, it was truly amazing. She sung confidently and loudly, which I thought was phenomenal. Urell didn't overpower her singing, which made the sound lively. I couldn't tell you how many goosebumps I got while Urell harmonized with all the other characters. It was truly something to remember. My favorite song she performed was "Do Re Mi." This sound was performed with the Captain's children. The children sing their hearts out and performed adorably.
The cast’s singing was clearly amazing, but the faulty microphones hurt the overall performances. For one, you could barely hear any of the nuns speaking into the microphone, and two, the frequencies crashed making a loud and obnoxious screeching sound in the middle of the performance, which was quite disappointing. It happened for a couple minutes, which really bothered people, since they couldn't get it under control.
Overall, the play was entertaining and worthwhile. The actors and actresses performed amazing, and they sounded good. The only thing that affected the musical was the faulty mics. If you didn't watch the musical, wait until the next Norwood High School production and make sure to attend.

A “Halloween” Disappointment
By Raegan Lewis
October 30, 2019
If you didn’t see the newest Halloween (2018), you didn’t miss anything, and if you did see it, I'm sorry you wasted an hour and 44 minutes of your life you’ll never get back.
Halloween (2018) is supposed to be the true continuation of the original 1978 film; however, it couldn’t be called “Halloween II” because that came out in 1981. Over the next 40 years, more than 10 films would play off the success of the original, but the makers of this latest film completely disregard all except the original.
The plot of this movie was to continue from the first and original. It was based off 40 years later since Micheal Myers tried to murder Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), but was only able to finish off her friends. Finally, escaping a mental institution due to a bus crash, Michael began killing again. In this movie Strode is prepared for him to come back so she can kill him before he kills her.
Halloween (2018) is what you would expect of a scary movie: Halloween Night Slasher, a lot of screaming, running in the woods and falling on random objects, gratuitous deaths (of everyone but the main character), and so forth. But the two standout qualities that other scary movies lack was this one was lame and pathetic.
The movie was too long. There were irrelevant scenes that didn’t seem to drive the plot or contribute to the film in any meaningful way. I don’t know if this happened to prepare for a sequel or to save clips for a sequel, but it wasn’t eye-grabbing or catching my attention.
During the movie, I remember trying my best not to fall asleep and waiting to go home, and I love the Halloween series. Some clips were funny, like when a boy was swearing at his babysitter and later told someone to get the [expletive] out because he was about to die. But I go to a scary movie to be terrified, not amused.
I would have liked to see some more things you wouldn’t have expected. Anyone who has seen more than, I don’t know, one scary movie, could guess what was bound to happen next.
The movie tries too hard for too long to focus on Strodes granddaughter, Allyson. I would have liked to see more of Strode. Her granddaughter played a minor role in the connection between Myers and Strode. The only thing she did was stab him once, but that's nothing compared to what Strode had planned or could do to him.
Even though Halloween (2018) wanted to stay true to the original, it picked the most boring characters and told a predictable story. If you’re a fan of the series and dying to see it, knock yourself out; but if you’re on the edge, don’t waste your money.

Upcoming Season For Herro
By Brandon Roberts
October 29, 2019
Do you have a favorite NBA team that has recently made changes to their roster? I am very excited to see one of my favorite players who I’ve watched since he was in high school. His name is Tyler Herro, and he was a shooting guard at Whitnall High School. He went to my favorite college (University Of Kentucky) and did a one and done season and got drafted 13th in round one to the Miami Heat as a shooting guard.
Without a doubt I am extremely excited to see how Herro plays and adapts to this new playing type. During the preseason he was showing dominance on his team and playing with absolute grit, in one of his games he went back and forth with his competition showing his love and heart for the game, proving that he doesn’t step down to anyone.
Herro has a ton of team members that will help him get to where he wants to be throughout the season. According to the Miami Herald, Herro proves his point that he wants to be the best he can be by saying “That’s just me trying to prove myself every time I step on the court against whoever I’m playing against. I try to prove that I'm the best player on the court every time I step out there.”
I can see Herro pushing himself to his limits and going for the 3-point record which is currently held by Golden State’s shooting guard Klay Thompson. Herro is constantly in the gym working on his game, and he focuses a lot on ball handling and his shooting drills to up his game. He is already a very good and somewhat consistent shooter but with his constant training and work ethic he will be one of the best 3-point shooters in the league and his generation of the league.
He has never had any injuries that could come into effect and change the way he plays, but the aggressiveness he plays with might come into the picture and eventually get himself hurt. So I'm hoping he doesn’t have any future injuries that could affect him in a negative way in his upcoming seasons.

Toy Story 4: To Infinity And Be...yawn
By Grace Mersch
October 29, 2019
Imagine a world where toys come to life when you’re not around, and they talk to each other, move around, and have adventures of their own when they’re alone. If you like this idea, the Toy Story franchise is for you.
Toy Story 4, a long-awaited movie in the Toy Story series, was the movie of the summer in 2019. Earning a total of $1.071 billion in the box office as of October 2019, everyone expected a touching, stunning movie full of new adventures from their favorite characters. Although, this is not entirely what happened.
I happen to agree with The New York Times reviewer Manohla Dargis who called it “great-ish”.
The plot line was okay. It begins with Bonnie, a young girl who makes a new toy named Forky. Woody and the group become worried they are being replaced, as she seems to be more interested in her kitchen utensil friend.
The storyline traces the group’s attempt to find Forky after he goes missing, and it unexpectedly turns into a reunion when they find Bo Peep, a friend from the past.
The plot might be the biggest reason as to why this movie wasn’t all that great. While we were all expecting something fresh, we were given a storyline we’ve definitely seen before in the past movies.
Even though the plot wasn’t impressive, the cinematography never ceases to amaze. As Toy Story was the first completely computer animated film, the graphics get better with each movie. Toy Story 4 provided crisp visuals that far exceed those of the past.
Even so, a movie can’t be saved by the visuals. If the plot line had been more interesting, then seeing the movie would have definitely been worth it. Let’s just hope if there is going to be a fifth movie, Pixar would give a better storyline than the others.

The Silence of the Lambs: The Perfect Halloween Movie
By Tara Boettcher
October 29, 2019
Everyone has heard of or seen Saw, Scream, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, and don’t get me wrong, those are classics, but the best kind of horror movies to watch that will get you terror-stricken are those that are psychologically thrilling. The Silence of the Lambs takes on that challenge well.
In director Jonathan Demme’s adaptation of author Thomas Harris’s award-winning book, The Silence of the Lambs, main character Clarice Starling, played by Jodie Foster, is a high-achieving student at an FBI training academy. She gets told to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, who is an intelligent psychiatrist but also a murderer and psychopath. Starling is asked to interview Lecter because it is believed that Lecter may know something on Buffalo Bill-- the serial killer who has been kidnapping and killing women in the Midwest. Starling agrees to talk to Lecter to take advantage of the opportunity given to her. Lecter, who is serving life in prison because of his acts of murder and cannibalism, agrees to talk to Starling.
There is no denying that The Silence of the Lambs is one of the best movies ever made. According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Silence of the Lambs is “dead-out spellbinding.”
One of the best scenes in the movie is when Starling meets Lecter for the first time. You get to see within the first 20 minutes in the movie how brilliant and manipulative Lecter really is. It is a great scene because you can empathize with both characters and really see their point of view. Seeing the renowned serial killer for the first time is something you will remember.
Hopkins won multiple awards for his performance. He made the movie ten times better. Perhaps The Guardian says it best: “Anthony Hopkins’s performance as Lecter is an uproarious technical masterpiece.” An example of one of Hopkins’s best moments is when he says, “I do wish we could chat longer, but I’m having an old friend for dinner.” Hopkins played this role so well that he terrified people for years.
The music, cinematic effects, and the storyline itself are all exceptional in the film. Nothing in the film seems like it shouldn’t be there. The plot is put together well, and you are never bored during the movie.
In short, The Silence of the Lambs really is a great horror movie to watch for Halloween. It certainly is something that you will “eat up.”

Hush...
By Daliah Khalil
October 28, 2019
Shh, shhh, hush. Not literally, but Hush, the movie is a great film. It keeps you on your toes at all times. The main character is being pursued by an ex- boyfriend on a mission to kill her. Will she survive? Will he be successful in harming her?
The main character, Maddie (Kate Siegel), is deaf and is living in a remote area. As she is writing her novel, Maddie is encountered by a masked killer destined to harm her.
According to an anonymous user on Rotten Tomatoes, "It's a sharp, finely tuned thriller that goes down familiar paths but with flair and skill. Flanagan doesn't hold back on the gore, but he doesn't rely on it." This user is revealing they believe this movie is a great thriller, and it will keep you on your toes.
Siegel does an amazing job playing Maddie. In this film, Maddie is deaf, so having to learn all of those signs and doing them correctly takes a lot of work and practice. Imagine being unable to scream and holler because you’re being chased by a masked murderer. That would be frightening, but also she is fearless when it comes to taking down the masked man.
Believe it or not, but the music did have an amazing impact on the movie. It added more suspense and allowed you to feel the stress Maddie was going through. The music seemed to make you feel like you were inside the movie, as if you were experiencing the traumatic events she was going through.
The plot was extremely shocking. There were many different aspects that occurred that were unexpected. It was like a rollercoaster, there were many ups and downs, but mainly downs.
Would you be able to survive her situation? Living alone in the woods, with no one around you for miles, only to find a masked murder in your house? I wouldn't survive. Would you?

Spooky Haunt Fest

If you are debating on going to Kings Island’s Halloween Haunt, I would most definitely recommend it. Kings Island is such a wonderful place to go to it’s for sure worth your money and time. Not only do you get to explore the rides but you can also make tons of memories with family and friends.
The biggest reason people flock to the Haunt (600,000 people attended last year) is for the haunted houses and decked out rides; these will not disappoint this year.
The haunted houses at Kings Island are very well set up. They have people hidden in places you would never think. The characters in the haunted houses have blood all over them and are very frightening.
The rides at Kings Island are definitely worth the wait in line. They give you such a big thrill, especially when you’re going up the tall hill on the Diamondback. The Diamondback is an amazing ride; it makes you feel a mix of emotions, starting with fear, and ending with joy. Making butterflies appear in your stomach, and although the ride seems scary, it is actually thrilling.
Kings Island is even more enjoyable and exciting when you can enjoy the rides and haunted houses with your family and friends. More memories can be made when you’re around people you enjoy laughing with and that's possible at Kings Island; there's lots of laughter!
But that's not the only thing to look forward to when going to Kings Island Haunt Fest. The decorations are extravagant and jaw dropping. Kings Island staff definitely works hard to make sure guests are satisfied.
Kings Island won't disappoint. It’s very worth the time to go and make lots of new memories and get that exciting rush!

Stranger Things is Strangely Addicting
By Emily Saul
October 28, 2019
Compelling plot. Astounding acting. Scary monsters. 80s nostalgia.
What more could you ask for from a series?
If you have yet to watch the Netflix Original Stranger Things or haven’t heard people share their obsessions with the show yet, you really must live under a rock.
The show stars some well-known names like actors Winona Ryder and David Harbour. But the show really helped welcome new names like child actors Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb Mclaughlin, Noah Schnapp and quite a few more.
The series takes place in the early 80s, which gives it the chance to show a ton of nostalgic items from that time like record players, colorful outfits, arcades and landlines. It also takes some work from 80s entertainment like E.T., Ghostbusters, The Thing, Back to the Future, etc., and works it into the storyline.
Something that sets this show apart from others are the outstanding performances put on by only actors, some of whom are only children. Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, a character with telekinesis powers, is able to act out a character who had been made a guinea pig for a mysterious laboratory.
Winona Ryder, who plays Joyce Byers, a mom in constant distress over her missing son, and Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, a child who goes missing after he spends an evening at his friend’s house, are able to perfectly represent the love between a mom and her child.
As well as Eleven, the show includes more supernatural elements. It also shows some creatures, which range from looking like a skinned fox with a flower for a face, to a huge monster with legs like a spider.
What’s great about the show is that it doesn’t just focus on one singular plotline. There’s romance, mystery between many different parts of the story, and there is some comedy here and there.
So far there are three seasons of the show, and a fourth is on the way. It’s one of Netflix’s top-watched series, and if you haven’t seen it yet, I wouldn’t delay it any longer.

Take a Bite at BJ's
By Emily Betts
October 28th 2019
There are many restaurants around Norwood, within a 4-mile radius we have hundreds of them. BJ’s is one I totally suggest checking out! It is a calm, friendly and tasty All American restaurant chain.
They definitely have lots of skills in the kitchen as well as with service. They serve everything from burgers to steak or even pizza. They are located all over America and the ratings are overall nice.
The night of Homecoming my boyfriend and I went there after the dance around 11 p.m. We wanted to go somewhere that would be good for both of us and that had dessert. Looking at the menu online we saw they had many different choices so we decided it would be perfect for us.
I should start out by saying the food was absolutely terrific. We ordered a few different things including the grilled chicken sandwich, which is what I got. It was grilled chicken with alfredo sauce and had the perfect taste. My meal came with mashed potatoes, which were very tasty as well. My boyfriend ordered the steak and they cooked it perfectly, and he also got mashed potatoes. The steak, which, usually, is not my favorite, but I decided to try it, and it was amazing as well!
Now the dessert is almost not even explainable. It was so great, we wanted to go back just for dessert. We got a cookie that was in a pan. It was a giant cookie with vanilla ice cream on top. The chocolate chip cookie was still warm, and with the ice cream, it melted in your mouth. It was just great overall.
The service was excellent, too. Our waitress was extremely welcoming and always made sure we had everything we needed. She was fast and made our dinner even better than it already was. She also helped recommend things and helped us with our meal choices, making sure we knew what we were getting. We were greeted as we walked into the restaurant and everyone there was very nice; great service throughout our whole experience there.
I would totally suggest BJ’s to everyone. My food, dessert and the service was amazing. It is a little pricey but it is totally worth it. My experience was great overall. I recommend visiting the restaurant when you get the chance to enjoy great food and service.

Give Some Spook to Your Halloween With Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween
By Braeden Eynon Long
October 28, 2019
Everyone’s favorite holiday is the one with ghastly ghouls and malicious monsters. The happy faces of trick-or-treating kids soon turn to screams as Halloween decor comes to life. All the monsters come alive in Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.
The story starts with two kids that get a call about a pickup of junk for their local business, Junk Bros, and they go to this old, creepy house and find a secret door. In this secret room they find a ventriloquist doll whose name is Slappy. After they say the magic words, Slappy comes to life. They get home, and after the kids reject Slappy’s request to join their family, he turns evil. Slappy creates an army of Halloween monsters to have his own family.
As Forbes writer Luke Y. Thompson says, “One watches Goosebumps 2 for the same reason anyone watches corny old monster movies: the creatures.” For older kids this is anything but false.
The spooky monsters is what really brings the movie to life and the special effects that are in play make the movie shine. One scene in particular near the end, when the antagonist, Slappy, and one of the protagonists, Sarah, are fighting on an electric tower, sparks fly all over as bolts of electricity pulse and zap, a decoration that comes to life, a giant spider made of balloons climbs to the top of the tower. The work put into effects for this movie are shown in even greater light when Slappy walks into a local department store and gets to the Halloween section, only to utter the same magic words that brought him to life. The decorations and masks hanging on the shelves begin to shake and shiver, as legs and arms emerge from the masks and the magic dust from the wicked witches swirl around, the Halloween monsters everyone knows emerge from the masks and join the army of monsters here to ruin Halloween.
No matter if you think the movie is “childish”, give it a watch and see for yourself just how great the special effects can be. If you’re a fan of spooky monsters and a bit of Halloween fun, I would recommend Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.

Maleficent Returns for Another Visually Pleasing Journey
By: Destiny Lortos
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is a magical movie that takes viewers on a visually enticing journey.
Prince Phillip has asked Princess Aurora to marry him. She gladly accepts and he asks for their family to all meet and to one day form peace with one another just like his father had wanted. Although Maleficent is skeptical, she agrees to meet Phillip’s parents and have dinner. When they arrive the King is stoked and happy she has arrived. However, the queen is very displeased because she has hatred for Maleficent. They get into a fight, and they declare war between their two kingdoms.
The movie is, to borrow a phrase from Digital Spy Ian Sandwell, “a consistent visual treat”.
A powerful scene presented is when all the fairies work together to try and stop the red poisonous fairy dust from killing them all, and one even sacrificed themselves to save the rest. Because of this sacrifice the room became full of flowers and the rest of the fairies were saved.
Actress Angelina Jolie performed very believable; it didn’t feel forced or over/under exaggerated. She is a very strong actress in the sense of her voice and how she presented her body language. Her performance is powerful because she makes you feel her emotions throughout the movie, when she is mad, you feel anxious. When she’s calm, you feel a sense of relief. As a character within the movie, though it’s kind of frustrating at first because she’s hot headed, and doesn’t reason well, however that is a part of her personality that Jolie displays well.
The music was overall well-contributed; it helped emphasize the emotion throughout the movie. The use of language was great. The plot isn't something new or spectacular, however it isn't bad at all. It could have been a bit more interesting, but overall it was decent. However, the graphics is where they excelled. The special effects and CGI (computer-generated imagery) was well done. The vintage dresses, makeup and style of hair was on point in the movie.
Overall Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was a pretty good movie. It had a decent plot, great actors and amazing graphics. If you enjoyed the first, this is definitely a must.

Sisterhood of the Traveling.. What?
By Starr Brock
April 24, 2019
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants probably sounds familiar to a lot of you, whether you read the book or watched the movie. For me, all I could say a few days ago was that I had only ever heard of it.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is surrounded by a group of best friends, Bridget (played by Blake Lively), Carmen (played by America Ferrera), Lena (played by Alexis Bledel) and Tibby (played by Amber Tamblyn), who are inseparable. Leading up to their first summer where they’ll all be apart, they come across a pair of jeans that oddly fits them all perfectly, despite their obvious differences in size and shape. They deem these pants a miracle and create a sisterhood where the pants are at the center of it all.
During their trips in the summer, they send the jeans back and forth between each other with a letter, hoping to keep them close and maybe even get a miracle out of them. I will admit that after Bridget wrote her letter, I couldn’t help but say xoxo Gossip Girl.
Let me start off by saying I decided to watch this movie only because it was a Monday night and I was doing what I do best, which is finding anything to do other than my homework. And I have to admit, I was never really interested in reading this or watching the movie even though it’s kind of a staple for teenage girls. It was probably the fact that whenever I heard the title, I imagined a pair of pants traveling with invisible legs.
When the movie first started, I was actually kind of bored. I realized it was really because of the idea I had in my head about the whole invisible legs things. Once I let that go, the movie was actually really good.
The chemistry between the characters was what really made the movie. They really portrayed what a sisterhood is about, which was the core of it. Honestly it was a little cliche, besides the whole miracle of the pants thing.
The director also did a really good job of making sure viewers could see what was happening with each girl without it getting confusing, which I thought would’ve been hard seeing as they’re all in different places with different things going on.
According to a review by Scott Moore from The Washington Post, “The emotional story and fine acting are enough to make this a must-see movie for teen girls. The real surprise is that they can make a grown man cry.”
The storyline is full of genuine moments and even some cliche and corny ones, but it was a really good balance of the two. If you’re wondering, yes, I cried. Shocker.
Honestly, I loved this movie. The messages behind it were real and genuine. So one day when you can’t find anything on Netflix or if you’re trying to procrastinate your homework, grab some tissues and a blanket and watch this movie. It’s better than the weird name makes it out to be.

Acting class takes on Bedtime Stories
By Haylie Schuler
April 19, 2019
As the end of the year is approaching so is the Norwood High School’s annual play put on by the Acting class, but this year the play is a little different.
This year's acting class will present“Bedtime Stories”. Throughout the story the dad, played by sophomore Sam Young, tells a bedtime story for each of his three children to attempt to put them to sleep while their pregnant mother is in bed.
When the class was first choosing which play to perform, acting teacher Ashley Martin was not sure this was the one to fit the class, but she wanted the students to have their say.
“Initially I was not thrilled with the choice, but it is really important for me to let the class lead with this project, and now that the rehearsal process has started I realized they made the right decision,” says Martin.
As the students began to look over the play, everyone just started picking spots, but as is the case with casting a show, not everyone lands the ideal role. Now that the group has started rehearsing, students are starting to realize why they are perfect for the part.
Senior Chris Marple says, “I auditioned for the son who is now Mya Smith but I was chosen for Prince 1. I feel like I relate to this character because our personalities are similar.”
Although Marple and many other students didn't get exactly what they wanted, the point of this class is to come out of your shell and by doing this play, many students will open up a little more.
Now that everyone has a part set in stone the class rehearses 2-3 hours each week for 8 weeks. The show will be performed on May 10 at 6:00 p.m.
Although getting ready for a huge play in such a short amount of time is almost as nerve wracking as it gets, having a teacher who is on track and strict with her rules prepares the young actors to do great when the big day is here.

The Umbrella Academy
By Savanah Howard
April 11, 2019
You’re going about your normal day when you witness a woman giving birth, even though she wasn’t pregnant that morning, and she isn’t the only one. Why did this happen? What will happen to the children? All will be answered in the new Netflix show: The Umbrella Academy.
The Umbrella Academy follows the lives of seven of these mysterious children after they are adopted by the world’s richest man in order to create a team of teen superheros. Their adopted father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, gives the children numbers based on their abilities, but they eventually are named by their nanny robot mother, Grace, as: Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five (his only name), Ben and Vanya.
Years later after going off to live their own lives as ‘normal’ adults, they come together after hearing of the death of their father. As Number Five returns from the future, he tells his siblings of the troubling future that is to come and the group must work together to save the world.
I originally started watching this show after a recommendation from my brother. Although superhero shows aren’t typically my binge-watch of choice, I decided to listen and give this new show a chance and, in the end, I enjoyed the show, but found my pros and cons.
Even though the show is based on teen superheros, the mysterious story line can keep even those who have never been interested in capes entertained . With that said, there are definitely some things I don’t like about this show.
This show constantly leaves you hanging on the edge of your seat, but not in a good way. The characters will discover a new type of problem ever so often that must be solved, yet they will wait forever to get back to it. The writers of this show want you to see how the characters are better when they come together, but use the time they are apart almost as filler. This leads to a lot of waiting around and side plots that typically don’t end anywhere.
Although this show has it’s cons, I still highly recommend it. The characters and set are both absolutely incredible with everything from the acting to a real-life set given to a fantasy-based story line. So, don’t let the few shortcomings get in the way of you binge-watching this brand new series.

Every Day
By Savanah Howard

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to wake up in a different body every single day? To literally walk in someone else’s shoes for 24 hours? That’s exactly what “A” has experienced her entire life in Every Day by David Levithan.
Every since they were a kid, “A” has jumped from person to person every day without ever having their own identity. Because of this, “A” doesn’t have a name, and their gender is never specified.
When “A” wakes up in the body of a teenage boy named Justin, they meet his girlfriend Rhiannon. By accessing Justin’s memories, “A” can tell that the two are having a rough patch, and invites Rhiannon to the beach. After having an intimate conversation, “A” starts to fall for Rhiannon and does everything in their power to see her as much as possible. The story then follows “A” as they try to find a “true identity” and form a relationship with Rhiannon by pretty much stalking her. ( I know, romantic right?)
Although I found the story line very interesting, there are so many plot holes that kept me questioning everything as I was reading and left me annoyed.
For starters, “A” can only jump to a person who is not only that same age as the previous body, but they must also be within a certain distance. This leave a lot of questions about how many people “A” would really be able to possess seeing as they can only possess each person once.
On top of that, Levithan attempts to make the reader sympathize with “A”, but that is the exact opposite of the way I felt while reading. “A” is not the victim in any of these situations. Don’t get me wrong, “A’s” life must suck, but it sucks even more for the people being possessed.
Although “A” only possesses each person for a day, so much can happen in 24 hours. Throughout the book, “A” makes different teens skip school, skip vacations, miss tests, and even lie to their families and friends.
Even though the story is fun to follow due to the love interest, I wouldn’t read this book if you’re looking for any more than a cheesy romance. There are too many questions and plot holes for any reader with with a questioning mind to care much about the novel as a whole.

Book Review: The Alluring Alias Grace
By Holly Borgemenke
March 22, 2019
Two dead bodies found in the cellar of a house, one man and one woman. Two servants who ran away together following that tragic event. Should they both be blamed for this murder or was one wrongfully convicted?
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood is a historical fiction based upon the real life of Grace Marks, who was involved in the murder of her employer Thomas Kinnear and his mistress, Nancy Montgomery. The question on whether Marks partook in the murders or was just an innocent victim, keeps readers wondering throughout as Grace’s memory may be unreliable as well.
A review written on Goodreads states, “this book is an extraordinary reconstruction of the life of Grace Marks.”
Towards the beginning of the novel, the image of red flowers is introduced during a confusing dream sequence. While this scene seems odd when first reading, the scene is a lot more important than it seems. In the novel, there are many times where events or memories are brought up more than once. Atwood did this to get readers to think deeper about the importance of a specific event.
Not only does the novel cover the topic of innocence versus guilt, but it covers social and gender inequalities and questions concerning the unconscious mind. Throughout the novel, these topics are shown through conversations between characters, and in the way characters are pushed to live.
Atwood put her writing skills on show through her use of multiple points of view from characters. In some sections of the novel, the point of view is from Grace Marks directly, though it sometimes switches. This use of multiple points of view not only showcases her skills, but it makes the book even more interesting.
Not only does Alias Grace provide readers with an interesting plot, but Atwood chose to include poems, letters and epigraphs that would relate to the events in the novel. Providing these pieces of information before a chapter can influence a view, or possibly provide information on what you read next.
Senior Hazel Mersch, who has read the book, says, “it is extremely engaging and a fun murder case to try to solve.”
Atwood not only wrote a captivating novel, she brought attention to a real life event that happened. She leaves the answer of whether or not Marks really committed the murder up to interpretation, so you have to read the book and form your own conclusion to the mystery that occurred in 1843.

Atwood not only wrote a captivating novel, she brought attention to a real life event that happened. She leaves the answer of whether or not Marks really committed the murder up to interpretation, so you have to read the book and form your own conclusion to the mystery that occurred in 1843.
Five Feet Apart

If you’re searching for a real tear jerker, or maybe the ideal love story, then I’ve got the movie for you. The new film Five Feet Apart has given classic romance movies a run for their money.
The movie follows two young teens battling Cystic Fibrosis. During their time spent together in the hospital they quickly fall in love. There is a downside to it all, due to their disease they must maintain a safe distance from each other in order to stay healthy. As the movie progresses their urge to break the rules and be together grows stronger.
The acting was phenomenal, the connection that the two lovers shared was extremely memorable. Their chemistry quickly showed and it got me hooked.
Actress Haley Lu Richardson, who played Stella was devoted to her role. She not only gave us a great love story, but she also spread awareness about Cystic Fibrosis. Her character allowed us to see the medicines and treatments that the patients have to go through daily.
Actor Cole Sprouse, who played Will gave us an inside perspective. We got to see how the disease really affects not just you, but the people around you as well. Most of all it shows how hard it is for people with this disease to find love. In the midst of it all he still had a great sense of humor that brightened up their situation.
According to Common Sense Media critic Sandie Chen, “This love story requires some suspension of disbelief, but its charming stars and and tear-jerking romance will appeal to fans of The Fault in Our Stars.”
The one part that threw me off was that it was very much like the 2014 film The Fault in Our Stars. It had a very similar plot, two sick teens falling in love. I can’t complain though because I still watched them both and cried for hours. I can almost guarantee that the movie is sure to have you bawling your eyes out by the end.
It was so sad that I found myself telling other people about the movie and getting emotional about it all over again.
Will they risk it all to be together? Watch to find out.

A Good Place for Laughs
By Starr Brock
March 6, 2019
If you’re looking for a new show that’s full of quirky and hilarious scenes but isn’t too over the top and cringey, then The Good Place is the show for you.
When Eleanor Shellstrop, played by Kristen Bell, dies and wakes up in what is known as the afterlife, she’s full of relief and happiness to know she made it to the Good Place, a community made up of individuals who led some of the greatest lives and devoted themselves to the greater good. Soon after being shown around by the Architect of her neighborhood, she realizes they’ve made a huge mistake. She isn’t supposed to be there. They aren’t her memories and they’ve mistaken her for someone else.
After having this realization, Eleanor is determined to stay in the Good Place because there is no way she’s getting sent down to the Bad Place. With the help of her soulmate, Chidi, she’s determined to get rid of old Eleanor's habits and become a better person in the afterlife to save herself from being found out by the neighborhood's Architect, Michael.
According to a reviewer from Rotten Tomatoes, “The Good Place is a perfect example of pitch-perfect storytelling. It’s sharp, audacious, and just a whole lot of forking fun.”
The show was so good that I ended up bingeing the entire first season in a day, which meant staying up until 3 a.m. I really couldn’t stop watching since it usually always ended on a cliffhanger and to be honest, I’m pretty impatient, so I wanted to know what was happening right away.
The characters are played really well. Kristen Bell does a really good job at playing Eleanor. She gives off a picture of change in a person really well for a television show. The chemistry between the entire cast makes the show even better.
According to junior Kierra Enderle, “I love Chidi and Eleanor, they need to get married ASAP.”
The show will have you laughing but also wishing you could talk some sense into the characters, maybe even give them a little slap across the face.
If you’re into shows that are unpredictable and hilarious, or if you just love Kristen Bell, then this is definitely the show for you.

We Are the Champions

One of the most iconic bands of the 70s, Queen, is just once again becoming the talk of the town. Recently, their legacy was recreated into a movie. Actor Rami Malek did a great job portraying the vibrant Freddie Mercury. The movie was recently nominated for five oscars. They ran for: best actor, best sound making, best film editing, best sound editing and best picture. They won four out of the five.
The movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” came out on Nov. 2, 2018 and quickly became extremely popular. The DVD was just recently released on Feb. 12, 2019 and was off of the shelves within a blink of an eye.
According to a written review by viewer Jeffrey M. Anderson on Common Sense Media, “it's exciting, edgy, and hits all the emotions.”
The movie is not only a fact-based drama about the rock band Queen, but it also shows some deep scenes. Even though the movie focuses more on Freddie Mercury’s life rather than Queen as a whole, it is more than excellent. Freddie Mercury experienced problems with his family and sexuality. Malek does a wonderful job reliving Mercury’s life during the scenes.
Malek portrays what is described as the perfect spiritual tone in capturing Mercury’s passion for connecting with his fans. This was the kind of connection he struggled to find in real life.
There are moments that capture Queen’s innovative spirit as the band refused to be pegged to a particular genre or formula. This creativity the band had created some amusing and inspirational scenes, such as when it shows Bohemian Rhapsody the song being pieced together.
Overall, the movie was well-deserved for the Oscars they recieved plus more. The actors did an amazing job with recreating each life of the members from Queen. Not only does the movie excite and please their originals fans, it was able to attract new fans.
I would recommend this movie to anyone 14 and over. The movie contains scenes with alcohol, cocaine, and a few kissing scenes. However, nothing is over the top or unbearable to be seen.
When Malek accepted his award for best actor, he was thankful to be able to portray a man who was always unapologetically himself and to be a part of Queen’s legacy.

Love, Rosie
By Destiny Carter
February 20, 2019
Since the season of love is almost officially among us, so will the cheesy, yet so good, romance movies.
Love, Rosie premiered in 2014. Starring actress Lily Collins and actor Sam Claflin, this British love story is very comedic to watch. Even with the 2 star rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie is definitely worth your while.
Reviewer for Rotten Tomatoes Francesca Rudkin says, “Love, Rosie succeeds well enough on its own, largely due to the fabulous chemistry between the leads, who bring their flawed, well-rounded characters to life in a funny, warm and amiable manner.”
Best friends Rosie and Alex have been friends ever since they were born minutes apart. During her 18th birthday celebration, they almost kiss, sparking their tempestuous love story.
When Alex breaks the news to Rosie that he wants to travel to America and study at Harvard, she is ecstatic, and they even planned on her going with him. Until Rosie gets pregnant after the school dance.
Years pass and Rosie never goes to America. Instead she becomes a full time mom to her newborn, Katie.
One day, Alex randomly shows up and in England and finds out that Rosie didn’t come to America because she had a baby.
Rosie has this extreme case of bad luck all throughout the movie. It seems there is hardly anything that ever goes right in her life. With her husband cheating on her, to her dad dying, nothing seems to ever go in her favor.
Alex marries Bethany, the girl he took to the high school dance, and when Rosie gets the wedding invitation she's on a mission to stop the wedding. But unfortunately he is too late.
This plot twisting love story will truly have you on the edge of your seat with smiles and tears. I’m not even gonna lie every time I watch this movie I cry.
Junior Starr Brock says, “I’ve never cried so hard at a movie besides Titanic, but that’s a whole different story.”
Collins is a fantastic actor. She is one of the main reasons that I decided to watch this movie because she’s so great in every movie that she’s in, including this one.
If you’re looking for a good love story, or just have free time, I’d definitely recommend this movie.
I'm Watching "You"
By Holly Borgemenke
February 11, 2019
A local bookstore manager willing to give up everything for you, who knows you better than you know yourself...these qualities point to a perfect boyfriend, but not everything is as sweet as it seems.
The Netflix series titled “You” that came out on Dec. 26, 2018 stars Penn Badgley as Joe Goldberg, who quickly becomes infatuated with a girl he just met. Elizabeth Lail, who plays Guinevere Beck, is the target of Goldberg’s undying love. The series shows how quickly an awkward crush can turn into an unhealthy obsession.
In a review by viewer Parth Soni on RottenTomatoes, “You is doubtlessly intriguing and is the show to binge watch right now if you haven’t yet.”
The new series focuses on many topics, but one that jumps out from the very beginning is on the image of a “nice guy”. Goldberg has all of the outward tendencies of a such a guy. He even acts as a father figure for his young neighbor, who has a mother who is in an abusive relationship. Goldberg puts on the deceiving image of a well rounded man, yet he has dark secrets that he hides from the world.
Not only does the series focus on images, it shows how dangerous social media can be. Social media provides a platform for people to share their everyday lives. Often, people share too much of their personal lives. The series highlights how easy it is for people to find out all of the little details about your life, and makes you question whether sharing those pieces of your life on social media was the best choice.
Throughout the series, it is oftentimes hard to not feel a sort of compassion and sympathy towards Goldberg. Goldberg comes off as a sweet man who has many problems, which can be connected to his rough childhood along with a relationship that ended because of cheating. The show does a good job at making viewers feel torn on whether or not they should sympathize with him. Although he has had a rough life at times, there is no excuse for the things he does.
Senior Kailey Ryan, who has watched the series, says "the show kept me on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t stop myself from clicking the next episode.”
The next time someone asks what you’re watching on Netflix, answer them by saying, “I’m Watching You.”

Can You Stomach The Autopsy?
By Destiny Carter
February 4, 2019
Are you looking for a thrilling yet interesting movie? How about a movie that will truly make you jump out of your seat? Well The Autopsy of Jane Doe is the movie for you.
Even though The Autopsy of Jane Doe came out a couple years ago, it's still making itself known on different platforms, including Netflix.
When the body of a mysterious woman was found buried underneath the house where police were investigating a different homicide, coroners Austin and Tommy are recruited by the sheriff to crack the case. What made this woman so mysterious, was the fact that she had no relation to the family that was murdered.
As New York Times journalist Jeannette Catsoulis says, “this shivery tour through a young woman’s innards turns putrefaction into a puzzle.”
Since there was no signs of abuse on the outside of Jane Doe’s body, what the coroners found inside didn’t make any sense at all. It was almost like she was still alive.
I was sceptical when I first started watching the movie because I didn’t read the description or anything to know what the movie was about. Someone recommended it to me, so I decided that I’d give it a chance.
The actors did a great job playing their characters. Especially Brian Cox’s portrayal of Tommy, one of the coroner’s that helped identify the mysterious Jane Doe’s body. Other than him reciting his lines well, he was funny. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but if it was, it could help people ease their nerves because of the comedy from some of his lines.
The beginning half of the movie wasn’t predictable at all, but as you watch it gets more predictable. Not saying you can predict every single thing that happens, but there are definitely some scenes where you can guess the outcome. That’s with like every movie though.
I wasn’t expecting the ending of this movie at all, I honestly don’t know what I was actually expecting from it, but it was far from what happened.
Junior Starr Brock says, “I almost peed my pants, like literally. I had to google what the ending was before it was even over.”
If you’re into mortuary science, or the work of coroners I’d recommend this movie to you. There are some scenes that are gruesome and are totally believable to what coroners actually do, and then there are a few that are questionable.
If you’re not into scary or gruesome movies, I wouldn’t recommend this movie at all. I definitely got jump scared a few times. But if you’re into that kind of stuff, grab some popcorn and load up Netflix.

AirPods, Are they worth the hype?
By Abigail Privett
January 15, 2019
A lot of students begin the new year breaking in new clothes, shoes, and maybe even electronics. If you’ve taken a walk down the hallway lately, you’ve likely noticed the increase in what might be the latest fashion “it” piece - wireless headphones.
It would seem that wireless earbuds are the new hype. Are they worth it, or are they too expensive?
Looking into AirPods specifically, you can instantly tell that they are more expensive than if you were to buy wired headphones. So what are some pros and cons?
With AirPods you can do things such as talk to Siri to control your phone, and you also don't have to worry about getting wrapped up in the cord when listening to music. Many students will undoubtedly appreciate the freedom, not to mention the ability to inconspicuously listen to their music and videos.
That small size, however, comes with a price. With them being wireless, they're going to be a lot easier to lose, and with a $159 price tag, it’s not an easy replacement. Another downside is they only work with an Apple product like an iPhone, or iPad.
Another con is AirPods do have to be charged since they don’t get their power source straight from the phone itself. They come in a little case that also has to be charged so they can charge the earbuds themselves when they are in the case. Lots of chargers it seems.
AirPods are on the higher of the market, but other brands aren’t significantly cheaper. Wireless headphones are in fact expensive to begin with. They all seem to be over $100. Higher end brands like Bose can be purchased for $199 on Amazon, or for a cheaper route, Sony for $130 also on Amazon.
In my experience with Apple headphones, they don’t last very long and tend to stop playing music after only a few months. But I have only had experiences in wired headphones so this may not be the case with the wireless headphones.
I do think it is convenient though that there is a charger case so you don’t have to worry about carrying a charger. When you pull them out of the case they automatically connect to your Apple product. They also stop streaming when you pull them out of your ears and continue when you put them back in.

You Won’t Want to Escape This One
By Nevaeh Downs
January 24, 2019
If you are looking to watch one of the newest movies, you might want to listen up and grab the popcorn for this nail biter.
2019 movies started off strong this year including the new film Escape Room that came out on Jan. 4. It was a hit to say the least with the popularity continuing to rise.
The movie follows six strangers who compete in an escape room together in order to win $10,000, should they successfully escape. It starts off with what seems to be a fun and harmless game, but then it shifts into them fighting for their lives. In the beginning we are introduced to all the characters and given many reasons as to why they specifically want to win the money. It might be hard to decide who you are rooting for throughout the film.
This thriller had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It had just the right amount of scares and plot twists in it.
The acting definitely did not fall short for me. Actress Taylor Russell, who played the character Zoey Davis, did an amazing job at keeping up her role. Russell pulled the whole movie together with her determination to live through the game and protect everyone no matter what it took. Ben Miller, played by Logan Walker, had a great sense of humor throughout the film and made it even more enjoyable for me. Both of these characters had me rooting for them the whole time.
According to Rotten Tomatoes critic Emma Stefansky, “It's so much fun that the payoff is ultimately a convoluted disappointment, but I can hardly complain considering how many times I gasped or cringed or whispered 'yesss' throughout the rest of it.”
The writers found a way to make it much more different than your regular thriller. The characters were very easy to get attached to. They were also easy to connect with in many ways. Overall I enjoyed the movie very much and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has a love of thrills.
Will they make it out and win the $10,000? Watch to find out.

Aquaman Saves DC
By Christopher Marple
January 15, 2019
Are you a comic book aficionado? Do you like water? Do you like Marvel? Then this action/adventure movie is for you.
Arthur Curry played by Jason Momoa is a fictional superhero “Aquaman”. It’s based in his hometown at his father's lighthouse and in the city of Atlantis. Momoa's character is an outcast because his mother, the queen of Atlantis, left when she fell in love with a human; since Arthur isn't a full atlassian he isn't really welcomed or wanted. While Arthur is the rightful heir to be king of Atlantis, he has one obstacle to stop this war and reunite the two worlds and that's his half brother the Ocean Master.
To take quote The New York Times Aquaman is a “movie for the ages”.
Not only did Jason Momoa kill the role Aquaman, he gave us so much more than just a pretty boy superhero. He showed us he can be heartwarming and loving, but cold when it comes to protecting the ones he loves.
Aquaman’s fighting scenes were notable for the unconventional filming. Unlike most action movies, it didn't use cut scenes. The majority of them took place in one long shot. The CGI was on par and the story behind Arthur was well incorporated.
Through all of this there is a bigger message multiple times. It brings up the problem of pollution and harmful waste in the oceans. That we are stronger together than apart. This movie will have you feeling 20 different feelings all at once.
Most people were going to assume this movie would suck because DC has a string of previous movies that were not good and had very poor ratings. Just to name a few “Justice League”, “Batman v. Superman”, “Man Of Steel”, and “Green Lantern”. Finally DC is stepping their game up with Aquaman and it doesnt mean theyre in our good graces but it was definitely a step forward.
This movie will leave you with so many questions, but It was worth the $11 dollars and I recommend this movie is you are a comic book geek, love a love story, or even just a good date idea. Aquaman was indeed a “movie for the ages”.

Be Sure to Take Your Blindfolds Off to Watch This One

It’s unlikely that by now you haven’t at least heard of the new Netflix original Bird Box. Netflix claims over 45 million accounts watched this movie within just seven days with that number still rising quickly.
It's becoming more common these days for the first scene of a movie to take place in the climax of the story, and that's exactly what Bird Box does. The movie starts showing the main character Malorie (actress Sandra Bullock) speaking very seriously to her assumed-to-be two children, telling them they're going on a “trip” and they have to do every single thing she says or they will die. Most importantly, they can't take off their blindfolds. We are given no information as to how they got into this situation, which pulls us in and makes us unable to stop watching.
This movie is about people trying to survive when you can’t look outside without a blindfold or something known as a “creature” will cause you to commit suicide. Malorie is pregnant and trying to survive in a house with several other people. They keep the windows covered and the doors locked. She is in the house with about 7 other people, but when we flash forward she is only with the two children, leaving us wondering where everyone went.
The Washington Post reporter Michael O'Sullivan says “The film essentially begins at its climax, and then backtracks, via flashback, to the onset of the crisis, hopping forward and back repeatedly over a five-year gap. This has the effect of destroying momentum.”
I very strongly disagree with this claim, as this set-up for a plot definitely does not destroy any momentum. It rather creates suspense and intrigues the audience. I found myself not being able to look away from the screen while watching it because, unlike every other thriller/horror movie, the storyline is not at all predictable.
It is stated in the movie that these “creatures” are a form of your greatest fears, deepest sadness, or greatest loss, which is just like what can cause us to be depressed in real life. This is an important message displayed in this movie, that many people may not have noticed. Like the people blindfolded for protection from whatever is causing people to kill themselves, we, as a society, are often blind ourselves to other people's sadness and depression so we don’t have to experience it as well.
We can feel these character’s struggle as throughout the movie they have to make important decisions in order to survive. There never seems to be a right decision, which is what makes the movie so unpredictable, and so enjoyable to watch.

A Real 'Eye Opener'

Birds chirp and leaves whirl. The voice inside your head is going to tell you it’s the scene of a beautiful day… but don’t take off your blindfold.
Bird Box is the most recent hit on Netflix and users are going crazy over it. It was available to the public eye a little less than a month ago and according to Google, had gotten 45 million views within the first week.
Actress Sandra Bullock plays the role of Mallorie, a mother of two, while the people around them are going absolutely psycho. Getting two children to cooperate is hard enough, but doing it blindly in the middle of a rapid-flowing river is an even greater challenge.
#BirdBoxChallenge has been spread across social media in the past couple of weeks. Viewers have taken the movie to the next level and are starting to film themselves doing everyday things such as riding a scooter and ordering in the drive-thru blindfolded. Netflix has came forth and said that they don’t condone or recommend this behavior.
Perhaps Richard Roeper from the Chicago Suntimes said it best: “If you told me Bird Box was based on a Stephen King story, I could definitely see that.”
Bird Box is suspenseful thriller with a horror side to it, just like Stephen King’s novels are set out to be.
A pop-up of rapper Machine Gun Kelly occurred towards the beginning of the movie, which surprised a lot of viewers considering that acting isn’t what he’s famously known for.
There wasn’t a lot of gruesome scenery applied to the movie, however, there were a lot of over dramified sounds that contributed to the effect that certain scenes were supposed to offer. Necks snapping, windows breaking and gunshots are some of the finest examples as to how special sound effects were used in the making of Bird Box.
The film was a little predicting, as most horror movies are, but it keeps you on edge the entire time. Bird Box is the type of movie that makes you want to yell at the characters through your screen for making stupid actions.
Overall, the concept of the movie was breathtaking and if you are not one of the 45 million people who have already watched it, I highly suggest you take 2 hours out of your day to do so.
The movie was a real eye opener, if you get what I mean.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic beasts and where to find them was one of the most intriguing movies I’ve ever watched. It’s filled with magical beasts, ranging from XL to XS. One of my personal favorite though, has to be Niffler. An interesting little guy that likes shiny things. He escapes out of main character Newt Scamander’s case, going on a little adventure and getting into a whole bunch of trouble.
The movie is the beginning of a sequel that also includes another movie called Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and a flashback to the past before the Harry Potter series.
Scamander searches through the movie to capture the other creatures that have been released from the case until he runs into trouble. The “bad guy” wasn’t so obvious in this roller coaster ride. He is not who you think he is, and he definitely shows his true colors. As Scamander goes through his adventure of catching the creatures, he does what everybody does in a movie. He falls in love with one of the most unlikely partners.
Scamander also runs into some true friends along the way, one being somebody called a “no-maj” which is a person that has no magic.
It’s interesting because there is some mention of places like Hogwarts and other wizardry schools. Making a smooth connection between the two series.
Scamander also gets in trouble with the wizard law for the danger of his creatures in the city even though he says they aren’t dangerous. His case gets taken away and then it becomes an adventure to get it back. I highly recommend this movie, and I will hopefully be reading the book next!

Concord 11

People use the word neckbreaker when they are describing something that makes people turn around to get a second look, almost like being shook. The concord 11s fully embodied the definition of a neckbreaker when they first premiered on TV on May 7th, 1995 during the playoffs.
The world was shocked when Michael Jordan stepped on the court with them because they had never seen them before. Jordan was fined for wearing them during game- 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals because they didn't match the dress code, but he continued to wear them. Jordan and the Chicago Bulls lost that series against the Orlando Magic in 6 games.
After having to wait half a year, people sat in lines for hours and hours in to get them for the days that they dropped, which is only once every couple of years. That is why they are so rare and special.
Through the whole first decade of the 21st century, the shoe dropped in 2011 for the first time in over a century, and that's also the most recent time that they came out . When it is dropped, Jordan only makes a small quantity so fans rush to stores days before the release date and camp out for a midnight release. In hopes to actually get a pair and come home in one piece.
Now Jordan Brand has its eyes on what may be the best-selling sneaker release in Nike’s history since the release of the Space Jam 11s in 2016.That, of course, is the global release of the Concord 11 on December 8. Are you going to try to get the Legendary shoes for $220 when they soon release?

To All the Boys I've Loved Before

What would you do if the love letters you wrote got exposed to the people you wrote them about?
High school student Laura Jean played by Lana Condor, wrote secret letters to all the boys in her life that she has ever had a crush on. Suddenly one day they are mailed out to them and her love life starts to take a turn. The number one target of her love story is Peter Kavinsky, played by Noah Centineo. He finds her letter and comes up with the master plan to have a fake relationship with her to make his ex-girlfriend jealous.
According to critics from Vox, “it’s that kind of movie: the kind that is as sweet and addictive as candy, that wants its audience to indulge in multiple repeat viewings.”
The popular 2018 rom com is a Netflix film based on the novel written by American Author Jenny Han.
Throughout the film, the acting and writing is incredible. The plot makes you feel like you’re included in it. You may be falling in love with one of the characters just along with the others.
It is not only about romance, there is also a great bond between the main character and her sisters. This movie teaches you a lot about valuing your family and friends around you as well.
I find the plot very interesting, considering how attached the writers make you get to the characters. And as a teenager myself, I connected with the teenagers in the movie because we could have the same issues.
Next time you’re cruising through Netflix trying to figure out something to watch, check out To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. You just might catch yourself crying or laughing by the end, or you may just turn it back on for another go.

The Christmas Chronicles

Sick of drinking hot cocoa to boring Christmas movies? This winter there’s a brand new movie to watch that won’t leave you falling asleep.
Santa is failing to meet the desires of the children across the globe. With a little hope, a little spirit and a little amount of time, Santa and his two wingmen go through it all in hopes of saving Christmas.
According to Gary Goldstein from the Los Angeles Times, “Kurt Russell was really born to play Santa Claus.”
Teddy swears up and down that Santa is a myth, yet he still continues to write his Christmas letters. When Kate jumps into Santa’s sack, she falls down a magical tunnel of presents and lands in the North Pole. When she read his letter to Santa, she discovers that her big brother Teddy had Christmas spirit all along.
Teenage boys can’t believe in Santa, that’s crazy. But Santa believes in teenage boys. Maybe Santa’s belief in Teddy and Kate might just be strong enough to save Christmas. The background music and the graphics made this movie hands down one of the best holiday movies I have watched.
In my eyes, this movie has the potential of being a Christmas classic in a matter of years. There was a perfect amount of action scenes that stretched from a car chase all the way to an elf attack. Kurt Russell definitely had a deep amount of humor built up for when he acted out his part in the movie. Russell is full of buffoonery and I think that’s one thing that really made this movie something to remember.
The plot was by far one of the most creative that I’ve seen come out of a Christmas movie. Overall, I think all the main characters were outstanding actors and full of Christmas spirit.
If you’re looking to have a holly jolly Christmas this year, this movie will undoubtedly set it off.

Work in the Office has Never Been Better
By Moe Daabes
January 10, 2019
If you ever find yourself scrolling through Netflix, or something bad just happened and you’re in a bad mood and you need a little laugh to cheer you up, I strongly recommend the classic The Office.
The Office is an old TV show that first aired on March 24, 2005 on NBC. It was based off of a British version that was made before it.
The show is about what's supposed to be a ordinary paper company called Dunder Mifflin. The show focuses on the Scranton branch that is managed by Michael Scott who is played by Steve Carell. Steve Carell did an outstanding job the first six out of nine seasons on the show. He played a huge part in the shows comedy side, he always keeps the audience laughing at his personality and wondering what stupid thing he's going to do next.
The show tries to get the audience to relate to the work place of Dunder Mifflin with all the personalities in it. They did a great job casting because personally, I relate to them all. It also has multiple office romances which are always a good idea. The main relationship in the show is Jim Halpert played by John Krasinski and Pam Beesly (played by Jenna Fischer) who eventually becomes Pam Halpert after the two get married. Their relationship was a big part of the show as it made a connection with the audience.
“If you’ve ever hated your boss, your job or both, then you’ll love this show,” says Rotten Tomatoes.
Another big part of the show was the relationship between the two salesman on the show Jim and Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) as they constantly prank each other all throughout the show. Dwight was an interesting character because he was a super smart hardworking employee, yet he lacked common sense and social experience. He was named ‘Assistant to The Regional Manager’ and continuously tries to accomplish his dream of being the actual manager of the branch.
The series received many awards during it time such as the Peabody Award in 2006, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe for Carell’s (Michael) performance, and four primetime Emmy awards. Later after, the show got criticized for low quality. Many people think that the reason for that is because Michael left. The season finale was viewed by 5.69 million people.
If you haven’t seen it yet I 100 percent recommend it, I personally love it.
